The publicity grind for Christopher Nolan’s latest movie, Inception, is beginning to mount. The L.A. Times published three stills over the weekend showing the action and reality-bending that recalls The Matrix. Has Nolan been reading Jean Baudrillard, too? Actor Cillian Murphy explained the appeal and ideas of Christopher Nolan’s film:
“It’s the fantasy world, but it’s the one that the mind itself can create or fall into, so the audience can access it in a different way than these other movies where you go to another planet or something. It’s the place the mind goes, and it’s often very dark and always interesting.” “
It appears the movie is now being touted as a heist movie set in dreams and the mind. What with the threadbare plot points referring to Leonardo DiCaprio’s character Cobb making a living from drugging CEOs and stealing ideas from their heads. All sounds rather interesting, no?
There’s the vague suspicion (at least to me) that Inception will be a visually astounding movie with GCSE-level postmodern theory that everybody will hail as a work of staggering genius. Yet Nolan claims to have been dreaming up this film since he was 16 years old. Be careful what you wish for, Mr. Nolan. Most ambitious life-long projects end up underwhelming audiences. Gangs Of New York anybody?
